Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description
On a black inverted pyramid 2 1/2 inches (6.35 cm) in width and 2 3/4 inches (6.99 cm) in height, the cipher "O H I O" in yellow, the monogram consisting of two circles, the outer one 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in diameter and 1/32 inch (.08 cm) in width, the inner one 7/16 inch (1.11 cm), with one horizontal and three vertical lines. All elements within the outer circle 1/16 inch (.16 cm) in width.

Symbolism
The cypher spelling out "OHIO" refers to the 83d Division as being originally known as the "Ohio Division."

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally approved for the 83d Division by telegram on 26 December 1918. The insignia was officially announced by the War Department on 22 June 1922. On 2 February 1966, it was redesignated for the 83d Infantry Division (RTU). The shoulder sleeve insignia was redesignated for the 83d U.S. Army Reserve Command on 22 April 1968.
