Symbolism
Maroon and white are the colors traditionally associated with the Medical Corps. The serpent is adapted from the Army Medical Service insignia. The torch is representative of knowledge.
Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally approved for the U.S. Army Medical Training Center on 11 February 1959. It was cancelled on 20 July 1973. The insignia was reinstated and redesignated, with description and symbolism revised, for wear by personnel of the U.S. Army Medical Department Center and School on 5 January 1993.
