Shoulder Sleeve Insignia
Description
A chamfered white square with concave sides 2 1/8 inches (5.40cm) across chamfers which are 3/8 inch (.95cm) in length, pierced by a similar figure set at right angles 15/16 inch (2.38cm) across chamfers which are 1/4 inch (.64cm) in length, all on a dark blue disc background 2 1/2 inches (6.35cm) in diameter.
Symbolism
The design was arbitrarily selected to represent the 4th Corps Area Service Command. White, being a mixture of all colors, was selected for the reason that Corps Area Service Commands may be composed of all arms and services. The geometric design represents the Command's numeric designation.
Background
The 4th Service Command Headquarters was located in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Command was responsible for the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Mississippi and Tennessee. The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally approved on 18 Jul 1941. It was amended on 14 Oct 1941 to change the background color from olive drab to dark blue.
