470 Military Intelligence Brigade Patch. US Army

To change information
Description
On a silver gray rectangle arced at top and bottom with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) black border, 2 inches (5.08 cm) in width and 3 inches (7.62 cm) in height overall, a vertical oriental blue stripe and overall a black griffin’s head.

Symbolism
Oriental blue and silver gray are the colors traditionally associated with Military Intelligence units. The three sections of the background refer to the three types of intelligence: human intelligence, signals intelligence, imagery intelligence. The blue stripe bordered by the two gray ones suggest the Panama Canal, referring to the “collection and funneling” of information and alluding to the unit’s previous location. The griffin, a mythological creature of vigilance and strength, a guardian of gold, symbolizes the unit’s mission. Black represents secrecy of the operations.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally approved for the 470th Military Intelligence Brigade on 23 June 1988. It was cancelled on 17 July 2002. The insignia was reinstated for the 470th Military Intelligence Brigade with the description and symbolism updated effective 21 September 2010. (TIOH Dwg. No. A-1-753)
